CALL FOR PAPERS: The Irish Constitution: Past, Present and Future

The Constitutional Studies Group at University College Dublin invites submissions for a conference on “The Irish Constitution: Past, Present and Future”. The conference is being organised to mark the 75^th anniversary of the enactment of the current Irish Constitution and will take place in Dublin between June 28^th and 30^th, 2012.

The conference line-up will feature a range of distinguished speakers from Ireland and other jurisdictions. Confirmed participants so far include:

· The Hon. Mr. Justice Donal O'Donnell of the Supreme Court

· Prof. Philip Pettit (Princeton)

· Prof. Mark Tushnet (Harvard)

· Prof. Deirdre Curtin (Amsterdam)

· Prof Gerry Whyte (TCD)

· Prof. Martin Loughlin (LSE)

· Dr. Aileen Kavanagh (Oxford)

· Dr. Colm O’Cinneide (UCL)

The conference organisers welcome proposals from all disciplines on any topic relevant to Irish constitutionalism. Proposed papers are not required to focus on Irish law alone. The organisers particularly welcome submissions from a comparative, conceptual or inter-disciplinary perspective.

The organisers also welcome submissions from early career researchers. A small number of bursaries are available to cover the travel costs of researchers who have been conferred with their most recent qualification in the five years before June 1 2012 and whose proposals are regarded by the organisers as a leading example of innovative research.

Possible areas of interest might include:

· The implications of the IMF/EU bailout for domestic constitutionalism

· The European Union, the Constitution and the Irish courts

· Calls for constitutional reform in Ireland: economic crisis as a constitutional moment?

· How to organise a process of constitutional reform

· Property rights and the property crash: is there a relationship between constitutional theory and economic policy?

· Republican thought and the 1937 Constitution

· Popular sovereignty and the use of the referendum in Ireland

· The relationship between the common law and a written Constitution

· Ireland’s relationship with the Commonwealth between 1921 and 1937

· Defining the state: National identity and territorial claims under the 1937 Constitution

· The influence of religion and religious identity on Irish constitutional law

· The 1937 Constitution and its commitment to the idea of natural law

· The right to education in the Irish Constitution and the judicial enforcement of socio-economic entitlements

· The relationship between the Irish and Indian Constitutions

· The influence of American constitutional thought on Irish constitutionalism

· The horizontal application of constitutional rights: lessons from the Irish experience?

Persons interested in participating in the event should submit an abstract of no more than 800 words together with a covering letter and CV. Submissions should be made to ucd2012@gmail.com.

Early career researchers should state in their covering letter if they wish to be considered for a travel bursary. They should also include a short explanation of why they feel they should be provided with one of the available bursaries.

Submissions should be received by February 29th, 2012.

Once a selection is made by the organisers, final papers must be submitted by June 1st, 2012.

Papers on European or International law will also be considered.
The primary objective of the Irish Society of Comparative Law is to encourage the comparative study of law and legal systems. Students fully registered for a masters in law, or law-related area (LL.M, MA) are therefore also encouraged to submit papers, and a special ISCL Young Researcher Prize will be awarded to the best paper delivered by a student in this category.
Proposal should be short (250 words) and sent to b.sage@ucc.ie.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is Tuesday 3rd January 2012. You do not have to be a member of the ISCL to propose a paper.
The Annual General Meeting and first plenary address by Dr Simone Glanert, University of Kent, will take place on Friday 2nd March. Conference sessions, the second plenary address by Professor Giuseppe Franco Ferrari, Università Commerciale “L. Bocconi” di Milano, and conference dinner will take place on Saturday 3rd March. Registration forms and additional information will be available shortly.

LAW, LITERATURE, AND TRANSLATION CONFERENCE
TRINITY COLLEGE, DUBLIN 9-10th of June 2012

There is no law without literature for law is also literature. Irish druids were not only poets: they were also invested with judicial authority. Still to this day, literature and translation of literature often deal with law, but very often the focus lies on the many ways of breaking the law. Especially in Ireland, poets and jurists are both celebrated and blamed for their talents in using words. Both are endowed with the power to charm their audience, sometimes at the cost of truth. The training of both a jurist and a poet involves a certain degree of self-characterization formed and influenced by culture. Law and literature, like all the humanities, share a common interest in the human experience and they look into what makes them specifically human. However, law aims at the clarity of an objective science whereas the power of literature and its translation rely on emotion and sensitivity of interpretation. Unlike what is expected from law, they feed on ambivalence, ambiguity, paradox and contradiction. Both Law and Literature are caught in the extensive possibilities but also the limitations of both written and spoken words. This conference aims to create an interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars of law, literature, and translation studies, and it seeks to explore the various interactions between these disciplines. It takes a broad approach to the fields of law, literature, and literary translation, welcoming papers considering key areas such as the following (and beyond):

Reforming Legal Education in a Changing World

The Department of Law at NUI Maynooth is hosting a Young Scholars’ Symposium in June 2011. The symposium is open to scholars currently engaged in postgraduate study, as well as those who have been awarded doctorates in the last five years.

This inaugural symposium’s theme is focussed on re-examining how we teach the law, and indeed, challenging many of the dogmas that have developed and taken root in legal education. Law, like the societies it regulates, is a dynamic and ever-changing area of intellectual inquiry. Anecdotal evidence indicates that legal education has not kept pace with the changes in the modern legal landscape.

We solicit papers which deal with this theme. We also propose to host some panels with papers of general interest. Accordingly, we also invite research papers on any area of law. All accepted submissions will be grouped into broad subject areas for roundtable discussion.

The event will take place on the historic NUI Maynooth campus located a short distance from Dublin city. There is affordable on-campus accommodation available for delegates, as well as more luxurious options with two hotels in the locality.

A Lectureship in Comparative Law (three year contract) is being advertised for the School of Law at Trinity College Dublin (the University of Dublin). The deadline for applications is noon on 10 January 2011. The following information is taken from the official job description:

The School of Law welcomes applications from legal scholars for the appointment of Lecturer in Comparative Law. The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the lecturing programme of the School and in particular to the development of the new LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law. The successful candidate will also be required to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate supervision, and will also be expected to engage in research and to be active in seeking research funding. In addition, the appointee will be required to carry out administrative duties as requested to do so by the Head of School.

The School seeks to make this appointment in order to develop a new specialist LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law, commencing from September 2011.

The successful candidate will be required to provide lectures to students on the LL.M. programme in International and Comparative Law, and to assist in the development of that programme together with the Director of the LL.M. programmes at the Law School. S/he may also be required to provide lectures to freshman and sophister students together with carrying out the assessment of students through coursework and annual examination, as directed by the Head of School in the Law School. The successful candidate will be expected to advance legal knowledge through publications, participation in conferences etc and will be required to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. S/he will also be expected to do such administrative work as shall be directed by the Head of School in the Law School. S/he will be expected to engage in research work both on an individual and collaborative basis and to be active in seeking research funding for same.

The ideal candidate will have an excellent academic record and proven teaching experience. S/he must have a PhD or be close to the completion of a PhD.

The appointee will have a strong interest in academic law, preferably in the area of Comparative Law or related fields, and should have a proven track record in both teaching and research. They must be prepared to carry out their duties on a full-time basis.
